R U OK? – For Our People, Our Communities

At Outcare, we know the power of a simple question: “R U OK?”

Our work often begins where people face the greatest challenges: trauma, mental health difficulties, family and domestic violence, and systemic disadvantage. We walk alongside people in some of the hardest moments of their lives, helping them navigate barriers, recognise their strengths, and reconnect with community. While we have deep roots in the justice and child protection systems, our care extends far beyond – meeting people at critical points and providing tailored support that restores dignity, builds trust, and creates pathways to a better future.

But on R U OK? Day, we turn that same question inward. Outcare wouldn’t exist without the people at the heart of our organisation – the diverse, dedicated staff who give so much of themselves every day to support our clients and communities. It’s our responsibility to make sure they too feel seen, supported, and heard. No bias. No judgement. Just a listening ear and the right frameworks in place for when someone isn’t okay.

This year, our team reflected on the different ways we ask the same powerful question. Across cultures and languages – from Punjabi to Farsi, Te Reo Māori to Noongar, and of course, Aussie English – our people shared their voices on how they check in with those around them. It was a reminder that while the words may differ, the meaning never changes: you are not alone, and support is here.

We also marked R U OK? Day with a BBQ that brought together colleagues from across the PeopleKind Group. We were honoured to welcome William Hayward from the Department of Justice, along with Dennis Simmons and Karun Cowper from Maar Koodjal.

Their reflections reminded us why days like this matter — the simple act of checking in on one another, and the powerful impact our work has in leaving a positive footprint in the lives of First Nations people. Their words grounded us in truth and reinforced that together, we’re making a real difference in our communities every single day.

We believe in a future where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive. And it starts with one small question, asked with care.

So today, and every day, let’s keep asking, listening, and supporting – one person, one family, and one story at a time.
