Joanne’s Path to Empowerment and Family Reconnection

Joanne*’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and transformation. When she first met her Outcare Case Manager, she was serving a three-year sentence for aggravated burglary at Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women. Joanne’s life had been shaped by trauma, family and domestic violence, addiction, and the loss of her six children, the youngest of whom had been removed from her care.

From the very first visit, Joanne’s presence was undeniable. Greeting everyone she passed with warmth and humor, she immediately spoke her mind: “I need a house!” Over the following weeks, she began to share her story -her struggles with substance abuse, the grief of family loss, and her deep love for her community and children.

Joanne’s journey with Outcare was not linear. She experienced periods of release into Outcare’s transitional accommodation, engaging in case management and support services, only to relapse and return to prison. At her lowest, her Case Manager intervened to prevent a life-threatening situation involving drug use. Yet, Joanne also had moments of achievement – working as a peer support person in prison, showcasing her artwork, and gradually reducing the severity of her offending.

Her breakthrough came during her most recent release. Arriving at Outcare’s transitional accommodation with no conditions, Joanne looked different and felt different. Through her commitment to herself, her faith, and her family, she began to embrace change on a deeper level.

Today, Joanne is a stronger, empowered woman. She has been reunited with her youngest child, plays a more active role in her older children’s lives, and is excelling in her work. Where she once felt shame navigating everyday situations, she now confidently advocates for others, drawing on her own experiences and knowledge of the system.

Joanne’s journey demonstrates the transformative power of consistent support, practical assistance, and advocacy. Outcare’s programs provided her with safe accommodation, guidance, and a space to rebuild her life – allowing her to reclaim her voice, her pride, and her future.
