Commissioner for Children and Young People, Jacqueline McGowan-Jones Meeting our young people

On 8 December, Outcare was honoured to welcome the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Jacqueline McGowan-Jones, to our office for an engaging and insightful visit. The Commissioner delivered a powerful message about the importance of placing children and young people at the heart of decision-making across Western Australia.

The Commissioner spoke passionately about her role in advocating for the needs of children across the state, highlighting several critical priorities:

  • Listening to Children and Young People
Hearing directly from children is central to the Commissioner’s approach. Their voices provide invaluable insight into the challenges they face and the solutions that will truly make a difference.
  • Addressing Child Poverty
While many children in WA are thriving, the Commissioner reminded us that 100,000 children are living in poverty. This stark reality impacts health, education, and future opportunities, and requires a collective effort to change.
  • Children as Our Most Precious Resource
Every child deserves safety, wellbeing, and the chance to reach their full potential. The Commissioner called on all of us—government, community organisations, and individuals—to commit to advocating for the wellbeing of every child.

At Outcare, child safety is a priority across all areas of our work. From our Arclight programs to the young people our care, and all other involvement across our programs, we are committed to creating environments where young people feel safe, respected, and empowered. The Commissioner’s visit reinforces the importance of this commitment and reminds us that advocacy for children is not optional – it’s essential.

Following the presentation, the Commissioner spent meaningful one-on-one time with young people from our programs, listening to their experiences and ideas. The visit concluded on a joyful note as our young people took on the very important role of judging Outcare’s Christmas desk decorations. Their excitement was palpable – not just for the decorations, but also for the delicious morning tea prepared for them. The office was filled with laughter, big smiles, and plenty of Christmas treats, creating a wonderful atmosphere of celebration and community.

We thank the Commissioner for her time, passion, and dedication to improving the lives of children and young people across WA. At Outcare, we stand alongside her in championing their voices and ensuring their safety and wellbeing remain at the forefront of everything we do.
